July 31--BOSTON -- Miguel Cabrera has discovered firsthand this week one big reason why Barry Bonds never won the Triple Crown.
If a hitter becomes too big a threat, the other team will intentionally walk him repeatedly -- even if first base is occupied.
Cabrera this week became the first player since the Giants' Bonds in 2004 to receive an intentional walk with first base occupied in three straight games.

It has been nearly three years since Barry Bonds broke Hank Aaron's all-time home run record, and now he's a fan sitting at home like everyone else watching Alex Rodriguez swing for No. 600.
"I like these things. I just love it," said Bonds, who was on the phone from his home in Los Angeles recently as he watched the Yankees games on TV.
"What A-Rod is doing is just totally great."

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) New Zealand captain Richie McCaw says the stadium pitch for Saturday's Tri-Nations rugby match against Australia should be "good as gold," dismissing criticism of the surface.
McCaw said Friday that he and the All Blacks squad visited the Docklands venue on Thursday and had little issue with the pitch that has been criticized by Australian Rules football players for being uneven and spongy in places.

With Alex Rodriguez on the brink of hitting his 600th homerun, it's a better time than any to discuss whether he belongs in the Hall of Fame. If it wasn't for the steroid allegations, A-Rod would be a lock to be elected on the first ballot.
